Alumni BBQ Draws a Crowd

The Alumni BBQ, held on June 19th, was a great success. Every decade of alumni was represented starting from 1949 to 2010. The rain stopped in time for us to have a beautiful sunny day for the BBQ. Over 150 people gathered to meet old friends, make some new ones and remember their time at SBC.

<!--break-->

The barbeque was planned as an alternate event to the Alumni Brunch which traditionally was held on graduation weekend. Having the event in June allowed for a better use of the facility as well as an opportunity to invite some of the younger alumni to be a part of the event.

The class of 1990 gathered for their 20th anniversary of their graduation. Many of the grads were able to make it. The group spent time catching up with each other, touring the school and recounting many stories from the time that they roamed the halls of SBC.

The afternoon was filled with visiting, baseball, table games and tours. The children were kept busy with the activities planned by Janice Rempel. When they weren't playing games they were playing on the giant inflatable trampoline and slide. The afternoon was capped off with a meal organized by Diane Koop.

There are more pictures of the Alumni BBQ in our Image Gallery section of the website.

This event was a warm-up for an event planned for next summer. July 29-31, 2011 will be our 75th Anniversary Kick-off Weekend. Make plans to come back to SBC next summer for what will be a weekend filled with entertainment, storytelling, and fun. Plan to celebrate 75 years of God's faithfulness.

It Pays to Graduate

It pays for those who are living and working in Manitoba or Saskatchewan to complete their program in order to receive further tax credit upon graduation. Both provinces offer incentives for students to complete their programs and live and work in their province.

The Province of Manitoba offers a rebate of 60% of total tuition paid for any program from an accredited institution. The Province of Saskatchewan has a slightly different program but also offers a tax rebate to graduates who live and work in Saskatchewan. The figures vary depending on the length of program and the year of graduation.

All programs offered at SBC are eligible for the rebate. That means that if you spend $6000 on tuition for a certificate at SBC you may be eligible for $3600 in tax rebates after completing the program. This is of special interest to those who only need a couple of courses to complete your program. The potential savings are significant.

For more information on this rebate program please consult the provincial websites linked above or talk to your tax-preparer to understand the difference that completing your program could make.

New Focus on Athletics

It is a challenge to live out your faith in the midst of playing sports. At the college level, it is equally hard to integrate these two components of life. SBC is rising to the challenge by offering a 2 credit hour course entitled, "Integrating Faith and Sport."

<!--break-->

This course is highly participatory and discipleship based, infusing Biblical teachings on love, respect, and character formation into our student athletes as they grow and serve in the crucible of competition. Students involved in one our athletic teams will be enrolled in this course, which will require them to attend team meetings, training regiments, on court lab sessions, and competitions.

Adding this component to SBC's athletic program helps to draw out the college as a place where the discipleship process and Biblical foundation are intentionally a part of everything that we do. The focus is to create students who are able to grow spiritually in the context of sport and put that aspect of their lives in perspective.

Graduation Ceremonies

On Sunday, April 25th, 30 students received their diplomas at the graduation ceremonies held at the Steinbach EMC. Among the graduates were 26 Bachelor of Arts recipients. This marks the largest graduating class in the past 5 years. The ceremonies were highlighted by the valedictorian address delivered by Nicole Friesen and the undergrad response given by Steven Brandt. The commencement address was brought by Tim Houck, speaker and trainer with Truth Matters Ministries. He challenged the graduates to take a step of faith and follow God into ministry opportunities. Ignite!, one of the ministry teams of the college, performed several songs and spoke of the message of hope and peace that come from faith in God.

It has been an exciting weekend that started with the Spring Concert on Friday night, followed by the Grad Banquet on Saturday night. This weekend wraps up a strong year of study at Steinbach Bible College. The faculty and staff look forward to spending some time recharging and preparing for another year in September.

Remember to pray for our graduates as they leave the familiar surroundings of SBC and venture into the careers and ministries that God has prepared for them.

Photo: Valedictorian Nicole Friesen receiving her diploma from Dr. Rob Reimer.

A Time to Encourage and Train

On Wednesday, April 21st, eighteen administrative assistants from churches in and around Steinbach were treated to a day of appreciation and training. The eighteen women were welcomed by an opening session on planning the design and layout process of desktop publishing. From there, they were treated to a beautiful lunch at Oakridge Nursery followed by a time to connect with the other participants. The day ended with some more training and a gift of appreciation.

Steinbach Bible College seeks to serve the local church by resourcing the staff and volunteers through events like these. The success of this event will give momentum to finding creative ways to enourage churches.

Fundraising Faspa a Big Success

A special thank-you to all the friends of SBC that made our fundraising faspa a huge success. Our goal of $20,000 was exceeded slightly through the generous donations of those in attendance. The afternoon was marked by performance of East to West by Ignite! The proceeds of this fundraiser will go to purchase a new 12' trailer, a new travel drum kit, and some lighting equipment that will assist our ministry teams as they go on tour.

A special thank-you to all the students and staff that made the event such a success.

Beth Moore Simulcast at SBC

On September 18th Steinbach Bible College will be hosting the Living Proof Simulcast with Beth Moore.

Beth Moore’s life-transforming Bible study challenges and inspires women of every age, everywhere. Joining Beth at this weekend event is acclaimed worship leader Travis Cottrell and the Praise Team.

Beth's focus will be on the Scripture that God lays on her heart for each individual Living Proof Live event — no two are the same. As she explores the Bible and how it applies to real life, you'll be amazed by her own experiences as a believer, and you'll be inspired to magnify and strengthen your own relationship with God.

<!--break-->

Beth's mission is to guide women everywhere into a richer, more fulfilling relationship with the Father. She is a woman of purpose, preparation, prayer and passion. It's apparent in everything she does, from teaching Sunday School at her home church to sharing her biblical insights and observations in her Bible studies and books.

For more details and to register for the event click here.
